Electricity buyback

Generating energy at home

In Victoria, households operating small-scale renewable energy systems (such as solar panels) can receive an offset on their energy costs for electricity they help generate.

Small-scale renewable energy systems can include wind, solar, hydro or biomass generators.

For these households, any excess electricity generated is fed back into the national power grid for other Australians to use. The household is then reimbursed for supplying this renewable energy - and this offset appears on their energy bill.

What this means for Victoria Electricity customers

Currently, Victoria Electricity offers customers a minimum 1:1 offset for any electricity produced by solar photovoltaic systems. This means that any electricity generated and returned to the national power grid will be offset on a customer's energy bill, kilowatt for kilowatt, at the customer's agreed energy rates.

A feed-in tariff is the offset issued to customers for contributing electricity to the national grid in this way.
